One or two characters (like Johnny Appleseed) were a puny over the top, presumably to withhold the kids entertained. First, I have to sign that most of these reviews are for the somewhat disappointing Criterion Edition released in 1999. The version I’ll be reviewing is the great improved Divimax (high definition digital transfer) from Anchor Bay. The two DVD edition of Time Bandits from Anchor Bay has isn’t perfect but it’s a stark improvement on the previous no frills version they issued in 1999 and the Criterion Edition from the same time frame.
The high definition transfer and the fact that the film has been enhanced for 16×9 televisions are definitive improvements on the previous edition. The recount is sharper although I did designate some minor edge enhancement and digital compression issues. On the whole, though, the report looks expedient. The first disc features only the film and it doesn’t have the substantial audio commentary compilation by Gilliam, Michael Palin, David Warner, John Cleese and Craig Warnock. That’s a pity because that would have made this the ultimate edition of the film.
Now the major complaint from some folks regarding the image size. Gilliam shot Time Bandits to be shown theatrically in a 1.85:1 ratio. Time Bandits was probably shot corpulent conceal (like Kubrick’s films so that they wouldn’t be badly “cropped” when released) . More than likely Gilliam matted the image AFTER the film was shot. That’s not a jam that can be easily solved unfortunately. Peaceful, Anchor Bay does the best they can with the materials at hand.
The second disc contains all the extras. The feaurettes include the trustworthy The Directors: The films of Terry Gilliam with interviews featuring Gilliam, Shelly Duvall, Brad Pitt, Amanda Plummer, Mercedes Ruehl, Madeleine Stowe and David Warner. There’s also an interview with Gilliam and Palin as well as the new theatrical trailers for the film. Some of these features duplicate comments heard on the commentary track for the film from Criterion.

There’s also a Terry Gilliam bio and, most importantly, a DVD-Rom version of the fresh screenplay. Both these features are no where else to be found. Anchor Bay includes a fold out Way of the Universe which also has a background on the film production.
As one would question of a Criterion release, the DVD of “Time Bandits” is an absolute pleasure, from the smart film transfer to the many scrumptious added features.
The production scrapbook is a esteem, along with the commentary by Gilliam and Palin. These features truly enrich one’s appreciation for the film; not only do they lavish praise on the actors playing the “dwarves” (who, in retrospect, did nothing less than a doughty job), but also speak many of the clever tricks that allowed them to produce such a sumptuously delicate film for the cost of Speilberg’s monthly catering bill. Compare this film to expensive clunkers like “Tron” (which came out a year later!) to be pleased the extent of Gilliam’s craft. Cleese’s description of his day’s work is howlingly comical, and David Warner is edifying and wryly humorous. The now-grown Craig Warnock is not particularly eloquent, however, and it’s hard to boom if he’s joking about the film scarring him psychologically!
The trailer is simply bad, after a promising commence, but it’s indicative of AVCO’s cluelessness about how to market such a current and unique film. They tried to pass it off as Python style comedy, sterling for kiddies and fun for grow-ups. In fact, it’s nothing of the kind – it’s a uncertain and rigorous film that one may wish to hold out of the hands of shrimp children.
Despite it’s vague resemblance to “The Wizard of Oz” told upside down (or inside out? ), “Time Bandits” is not a typical (fresh) children’s film. It has an conventional Grimm-ness, with creatures dying gross, sweaty deaths and even “ample” characters behaving quite badly at times. In short, it is more utterly just than any fantasy film made since Disney bowdlerized “Snow White.”

Her verbal abuse on this speak even extends to D.J. Then there is the yell of Jackie and Fred. At mid-season Jackie begins to tire of Fred, going out for nights of dancing with another man. When this comes to light Fred understandably leaves. However, Jackie likes her new-found independence and seems genuinely disappointed when Fred wants to return home and give things another try. From that point on, she refers to him more like a nest of termites she can’t afford to exterminate than the husband she married less than a year before. In the extinguish, while the two are eating what is supposed to be a romantic dinner, Jackie tells him it is over. He rolls over and takes this decision with no further discussion, and subsequent seasons glimpse no further mention of Fred – he’s not even mentioned again as being piece of his son’s life. Thus Fred has fulfilled his purpose – having swam upstream to spawn, and having accomplished that mission, he evaporates like a daydream who was never even given the courtesy of a last name.

A couple reviews have called this season the beginning of the waste. As I spy it, however, it’s more like the middle. The “beginning” of the kill came about halfway through season five when Lecy Goranson hit the road, Roseanne’s ego started to surface more persistently, and the Conner family dynamic began changing. The explain started its decline serve then, and with season seven there was unfortunately no turning succor to the glory days of the show’s first four years.
Season seven had its part of problems, but the biggest of them may have been the star herself. The lines between Roseanne Barr and Roseanne Conner were terribly blurred by this point. And having Tag and Becky recede in fair to gain a void wasn’t critical either. Of course, had Goranson been playing Becky at the time, I may not have minded so grand. The horribly miscast Sarah Chalke was bad as Becky, merely saying her lines with no emotion or impact at all.
